Listen girls. And coaches. And parents. There is already way too much drama in a girls life. The one place that she should feel safe from all the melodrama is on the softball field. In the years coaching fastpitch softball, there hasnt been a single season. Not one single season - that hasnt involved some parental drama that filtered its way onto the field. The saying goes, that all sh*t runs downhill, and when you are talking about a group of girls - it doesnt just roll downhill, it floods with the force of Niagara Falls. And it ends up on those spaces in the brickdust that seperate … [Read more...]
Fastpitch Softball Drills – Coaching Tips
Do you use fastpitch drills to help condition your team? It’s a fact that there is a fastpitch softball drill you can use for nearly every single teaching lesson known to the softball player. And using the drills are perfect as a reminder for keeping your girls in form and teaching the fundamentals. But how do softball fastpitch drills measure up in a game? One of the problems with running only drill-based practices is that the edge of competitiveness that comes from playing the game are often removed from the scenario. Plus, a drill uses the best-case scenario. If you are hitting off … [Read more...]
Strike 1, Strike 2, Strike 3 – Your OUT – Fastpitch Hitting
There is nothing more frustrating than watching your child, or one of your players go through a hitting slump. They always seem to come on at just the wrong time, like when you are playing in a championship game or when you are behind by one stinking run with bases loaded and two outs in the last inning. The problem is that fastpitch hitting slumps can last for weeks or even months at a time. It is a hard problem to fix because it often exists in the mind of the athelete rather than in the way they are holding their hands. While most coaches are equipped to fix positional errors, or bad … [Read more...]
Girls Need to Feel Good to Play Good
During one of the last fall tournaments, the team had a pretty bad showing. There were a lot of emotionally turbulent things going on within the team and among the members. You can only imagine how this affected 10 normally competitive and adept softball players. (It wasnt pretty!) When it comes to coaching girls teams - emotional drama CAN play a pretty big role in how well they play on the field. It's easy for parents and coaches to sit back and simply tell the girls to "get over it!" But the truth is that strategy 'aint going to work.' One of the biggest differences between … [Read more...]
Fastpitch. Not Just a Game
I have met a lot of girls who play fastpitch. It seems to me, that nearly every girl I meet, expereinces some sort of emotional high when they are standing on the field. Maybe its the dirt. Or maybe its the generalized excuse of the game that allows girls to get aggressive and mean for once in their life. Or maybe its the simple thrill of trying to hit an optic yellow ball as far as they can and running from base to base that makes so many girls fall in love. Whatever IT is, I know first hand that for the girls that play fastpitch - it is not just a game. Fastpitch softball is a way … [Read more...]
Silly boys….Softball IS for Girls
As a parent of four girls, it is often frustrating to see how much emphasis is placed on baseball, while fastpitch players seem to get thrown in the background. The girls work just as hard, sweat just as much, spend as much time at the field as the boys, yet never seem to get the recognition that they deserve? Why is that? It seems that in 2011, we have come to a point that girls and women's athletics should take centerstage in the same manner that boys sports programs do. Recreation departments should offer just as much opportunity to girls as they do to boys, and leagues and players … [Read more...]
