The thing about broken people is that they don't need OUR forgiveness. They need their own. There is a big misconception about all of that. My mama was not a bad person, not a bad mother. I know what you are thinking. My mama was just a broken person. When my dad left us - the mirror that was her heart, began chipping away piece by piece. It didn't hurt me and my brother so much, as we were used to him being at the outfield fence of our lives. But it broke her. And then when my grandmother died her heart shattered into a million pieces leaving millions of tiny shards of glass … [Read more...]

My Last at Bat | Softball is For Girls
It was a breezy and cool Thursday - March 12th to be exact, playing on my high school field during our second region game (meaning it counts), and it, my last at bat was UGLY. 6th inning, down by one run, two outs with two of my teammates on 2nd and 3rd and me at the plate. It started out as a decent at bat, and I held a 2-2 count fouling off several balls against one of our region rivals when I swung out of my shoes at BALL high in the zone, probably close to my forehead for strike three. I smiled that smile that comes with years of playing softball when you know you were just 'handled' … [Read more...]

Is Softball ‘Essential?” | Softball is For Girls
The big question for many of us, and one we see being asked, debated, and argued over all over social media and beyond, is.... Is Softball Essential? Of course you could replace the word 'softball' with just about anything right now. Such as work, baseball, graduation, SCHOOL, haircuts, actual visits to the doctors, grocery shopping, vacation, going to the bank, lacrosse, track, mulching the yard, the playground...You get the point. It's been about 6'ish weeks since we have all adjusted best we can, to sheltering in place, or quarantine as many like to call it. In these weeks, there … [Read more...]
What If? | Softball is For Girls
At the end of the journey, parents of athletes end up with a lot of memories, a lot of regrets, a lot of thoughts. One minute you are teaching a kid who cannot even pour a glass of milk how to hit a ball off a tee, and the next you are packing up trophies and watching them fly off into something that resembles adult-hood. What if, instead of waiting until it's over, we asked ourselves - or gave some thought to the hard questions now. Would it change your journey? Would it help? Would it change anything you do now? Would it change the outcome? Would it change the relationships in your … [Read more...]
Bully Baller Moms (And dads) | Softball Is For Girls
If we had a quarter for every time we heard a softball parent say that they joined a team, only to find out that the other parents didn't welcome them - we would be wealthy, indeed. This bully baller mom (and dad) thing is apparently a thing.... A sad reality in youth sports is that despite their being plenty of room for every kid on the field to shine, parents are intimidated by other kids, especially new kids - who join their team and perhaps 'challenge' their child for a position or playing time. And boy can things get ugly and downright mean. One of the reasons there is so much … [Read more...]

Shout out to All the #GIRLDADS | Softball is For Girls
Hashtag #girldad is trending in response to Kobe Bryant's untimely passing. And today, we want to give a huge shout-out to all the girldads out there who stand up, show up, support, encourage, coach, mentor, listen to, raise, empower, and love their daughters. And the beautiful thing is that these girldads don't have to be 'dads' at all. The softball community is proof of just how powerful a strong male presence can be in the life of a girl. So many of the coaches that we know, are not only invested in the raising of their own kids - but the kids of others as well. Girldads can … [Read more...]
You Might Be an A$$Hole Sports Parent if….
Being a sports parent is not for the faint of heart. The combination of supporting your children whom you love more than anything in the entire world, competition and being let loose in the wild kingdom of youth athletics is not always an easy task. Sometimes, it brings out the worst in us. Sometimes, we get caught up and lose sight of the big picture. It's ok. Luckily our kids forgive us quickly, and we can live and learn IF(and this is a big IF) we are willing to recognize when we are acting like a$$holes and take steps to make a change. :) So today, a short and sweet recount of just a … [Read more...]
