If you have never read anything from Softball is For Girls, we ask that you read this and share it with your girls. Our motto has always been to empower, and these words of wisdom from a coach we know and love, pretty much says it all. Softball is not just softball. It’s life disguised as a game. God Bless all of you!

Always be coachable. Be willing to change if it means you’re getting better at being a better person. Sometimes, this will require you to move beyond your comfort zone, so… move. This will also require you to be humble and willing to improve things about you that will make you a better human.
If you don’t want to see strike 3, then don’t see strike 2. Opportunity may not present itself more than once, so if a great pitch comes that can make you better, swing the bat! Great moments are born from great opportunity, so you must be willing to swing the bat!
The plate will ALWAYS be 17 inches. You know the boundaries of right and wrong. Right is right, and wrong is wrong, no matter the situation. You also know how to be classy and how to be a woman of integrity. Always hold yourself accountable. Never make excuses for mistakes or shortcomings- own them, and don’t let them happen again. Surround yourself with people who will keep you at 17 inches.

No one achieves success alone. You will always have family, friends, teammates, coaches, co-workers, and bosses who will help you get to where you want to be. Be thankful for each of them, and never miss an opportunity to thank them for being supportive of your goals.
Sacrifice is necessary for success. Sometimes, the best plate appearance you will have in a game is a ball that travels 6 feet and results in an out for you. However, your teammate advanced to scoring position. In that commitment to sacrifice yourself for a teammate, you achieved a level of respect, appreciation, and loyalty from those who are important to you. Such actions ripple for years and become part of your legacy in the lives of those you played with while on a team. Your sacrifices may not always be known, but they can have an eternal impact on the world. Just wait until you are mamas and wives… you’ll understand sacrifice on a whole new level at that point in your life.
Commit to the swing. Never, ever, never do anything half-hearted. You’re either all in or all out. There is no in-between. This applies in being on any team for the rest of your life- your marriage, your children, your career. Be great, always. Be all in. Even Jesus warns to not be lukewarm, so if Jesus says it, DON’T DO IT!
Take a lap. This is perhaps the most helpful thing you will learn from softball when it comes to everyday living. People will make you mad. They will disrespect you, and they will hurt you. Before reacting, take a lap. Self-discipline is a mastered art. It is reflected in your acquisition of wisdom as you get older. Understanding how to handle yourself in any situation is incredibly powerful.
Next pitch. You will mess up. Keep going. The trick is to get closer to your goals every single day. But some days, it rains. It does not matter. Keep going anyway. Throw the next pitch. Trust me, this will prepare you for remaining steadfast in situations in which you cannot waiver. You must dig in, hold on, and throw the next pitch.
$8.00 Ball. Take care of your stuff. Someone worked hard for your to have it. Someday soon, you will reach the point of your life when you buy your own things and have to take care of them without the help of someone else. You will then learn the value of things when it is your money that pays for them.
Play with purpose. God strategically placed you on your team and with the ability to play softball for a reason. He gave you a set of skills that are meant to help glorify HIM, not you. This can be difficult at times because our own flesh forgets why we were created. This principle applies in all areas of life. Do everything with a clear and defined purpose. Remember… quality over quantity , always.
Practice how you want to play. Practice is supposed to be difficult. It’s in the “trenches” of competition that separate the good from the great. You have to practice not until you get it right but until you can’t do it wrong. Your mentality at practice will dictate how you play in games, especially with your focus. The same is true for life. Achievement comes from the work you put in to anything you do. Coach Wooden states that you should never mistake activity for achievement. Your best is your best, and you can always make your best better with hard work.
Be a good human. The greatest and truest statement of faith is a life well lived. It is faith fleshed out through risks and sacrifices (from Draw the Circle). Your legacy as a person is important to this world. You will live on through the people who are a part of your life, your children your family, and many others (especially the girls you play with in this season of your life). Always know you DO have an impact, so make it a good one!
